That makes the journey to crack the recipe worths the effort, by trials and using our taste buds and what we can remember of the note we may still be able to achive a close copycat.
I don't eat KFC often, but when I want, there is one outlet that still makes it good, they are not the same everywhere.
The Aroma in big cities is almost gone, but around them, where it is not as crowded, I can always detect the special KFC fragrance in the open air.
Its my opinion that we just need some spices to create it, other spices only play a minor rule in the recipe.

You might find it interesting (i certainly did), that the corporation let the trademarks established in 1966: Colonel Sanders’ Recipe Kentucky Fried Chicken Colonel Sanders’ Recipe Col. Sanders’ Recipe Kentucky Fried Chicken Col. Sanders’ Recipe Expire in 2006. Trademarks are perpetual as long as you wish to keep renewing them and they are in use. I am not a lawyer, but I have this idea that if the trademark expires, anyone can call anything they mix up the Colonel Sanders’ Recipe, as it carries less legal “history” and association. This might be beneficial for the corporation, when choosing *not* to follow the recipe. KFC probably has many other legal tools to prevent other companies from infringing on their chicken business, but they may gain some ingredient flexibility from losing the trademark. Just an idea…. or maybe it was just an oversight…. :-) Since they no longer call it Kentucky Fried Chicken, I can see letting the trademarks containing this lapse. And if they are no longer using Colonel Sanders recipe...

SA KFC CHIP SEASONING Salt (iodated), herbs & spices [(paprika, chilli powder),(black pepper, coriander, marjoram, celery), maize flour, monosodium glutamate (E621), sugar, vegetable powder (garlic), anti-caking agent (E551), vegetable oil (sunflower), flavouring, extracts of spice(paprika)
This is from KFC's South Africa allergen list. Marjoram is the only herb ever mentioned by name in the entire PDF. Aren't these chips (fries) supposed to taste like the OR in a way? I have never had them. Maybe someone can enlighten me.
Marjoram is on the KFC Japan photograph and in both of Glen's lists too. Also one of the tins in the colonels kitchen. Marjoram was also the only herb disclosed to the Ukrainian gov according to deepfried101. Are we underestimating good old Marjoram maybe in favour of fancier items like Mexican Oregano...? Why are people using tiniest amounts of Marjoram if at all?

After I try my latest "Restricted to 5 items beyond B&W Pepper" recipe using Mexican Oregano, I'll have to try the same recipe with Marjoram. But for now I just need to try Mexican Oregano once because it smells so good compared with Marjoram or Oregano, and it tasted delicious on scrambled eggs. I'm not even sure if I could bring myself to sprinkling Marjoram or Oregano on scrambled eggs.

I bet it is being used in that industry a lot.

Three points to consider regarding KFC Aroma:
1. We are cooking a small amount of chicken comparing to KFC, imagine using 0.4 g of an essential contributor to this Aroma in 2 cups Flour, you will get maybe onlly half of this in the coating, you fry two batchs, means you have only 0.1 g every batch, but KFC is frying much bigger amount of chicken than that everytime, so when they release the pressure, the Aroma will fill the air much much stronger than what we usually have.
2. We mostly cook in and around our kitchen, I have noticed that the Aroma in the kitchen itself is different than that when for example you go out and then try to smell the odour that is coming through, I think the KFC workers will notice a different fragrance than that which is coming out of the outlet and makes people want to get some of that lovely fried Chicken.
3. In KFC they are not frying the Original recipe only, there is the Crispy Chicken, Hot Wings, Burger, Zinger, Potato, Gravy, Biscuit... How can we isolate the OR Aroma alone from that wild.
I read of some people that cooked the OR seasoning at home and didn't get the extensive note, it would be reasonable to keep all this factors in mind.

DT I never considered that lots of different KFC offerings being cooked in consort must factually impact the mystique of the aroma. You are spot-on once again.

I dont think the Original Recipe Aroma contributes more than 20-30 % of the overall KFC Aroma, even these numbers may look on the upper limits when you imagine how much Potato, Crispy, Hot Wings, Strips, Biscuits, Zinger, Burgers being also cooked there.
