A mixture of Marjoram, Cilantro (the plant, not the seeds), Oregano, and a squeeze of lemon/lime would be my guess as to a decent Mexican Oregano substitute. I believe it was DutchGuy who noted that when deep fried, Cilantro loses it's soapy/metallic nature.

The more I think about this, the more the citrus flavor aspect of Mexican Oregano favors lime over lemon...
I'm not quite sure as to why so many internet references 'parrot' that Mexican Oregano also contains licorice undertones, as I can't seem to detect this particular flavor/aroma aspect within it.

This has been what have found in relationship to MANY Spices and Herbs.
The vast Difference if a Defined Taste people exhibit in Herbs especially is typically related to
Ground Herbs which are also More stem in the Ground Press, Will Cause a More Earthy and other Flavor profile
Than
A rubbed or Leaf Loose Packaged item or a Full Herb stem and Leaf which you can Rub on your Own and most discard the Stems Typically.
The Two different processed and Packaged items CAN be Vast difference. Which most people will not notice if they purchase the same type of Herb for there use over and over, to maintain a consistent flavor.
I agree the most typical flavor can be citrus in Oregano, BUT when you taste a Oregano Stem its more root Earthy Licorice depth, ONLY a opinion which Everyone can test on their own by buying other forms of Herbs on and off the stem or leave instead of Pre-Powder or visa Versa.

I have posted these photo before. President Choice in Canada and Walmart (Walmart occasionally) sell this Brand It in the Last Year has had the Highest grade items for the Cost and Availability ? IN CANADA, other areas Possibly. THE sage as a Example WE HAVE HAD TO MODIFY OUR RECIPES with the use AS IT IS SO POWDERFUL it is 60% stronger or possibly 65% Stronger then ANY other items we have USED? IF you use the OLD MATH recipes amount for a current spice it will BE so Overpowering it will make your recipe a MESS from over powder Sage?

The good news is Kaweempo knows the real OR recipe. So if they return to the site I'm sure they can answer the question. Is Mexican Oregano an OR ingredient as DeepFried101 has implied.

I will repeat Karl indicated Sage in His recipe which has been Also Noted in the 99X I guess checking Marion kay spices to see if the Oregano was a Mexican Oregano-Sage might be a thought What name people call it Mexican Oregano - Sage are Both correct under FDA and CFIA Regulations as BOTH are classified as SAFE IF the FDA would have never approved the use of either Name they would have forced Tone's to change the Packaging WHICH WAS NOT DONE. and current Day either name or both can be printed on RETAIL PACKAGING.

My question for the day:
What if Garlic Powder and White Pepper are somewhat neutralizing in regard to each other?
