As a young man, CHS was stationed in Cuba. He undoubtedly became familiar with Cuban Oregano and how it was used. Many years ago, Mexicans had migrated to the Southern USA, with little fanfare. I new of Mexicans as a boy in the 1950s. Surely CHS discovered "their" oregano during those early days. I recall the story about the man who watched CHS rub a leafy branch between his hands during a demonstration. CHS said it was oregano. This is how many Italians dispense oregano. The man said he tried to create the KFC taste, but the oregano overpowered his attempt. There are several ways to look at this information. I never budged the needle at TCK with this story. I read it on a blog.

If oregano is in his recipe it is the normal variety. Mexican oregano is bland and lacks flavour. This site doesn't even list it as a pairing with chicken, but does for the Mediterranean. spicesinc.com/blogs/oregano-throwdown-mediterranean-vs-mexicanI've never understood the hype for this Mexican one as being in the O.R.

If anything, it's the exact opposite. Mexican Oregano is bursting with a multitude of flavor and aroma, and Oregano is a dull and boring and bitter one trick pony.

Having never tried either oregano I have no grounds to claim one or neither work. I’d caution the source of the distractions more.
Consider by testing and by sources. The Marion Kay variants have marjoram listed or tested. Which seems to be a highly rated substitute. So 99x, Grace’s, Canadian contact. And if at one point CHS felt these products were better than Corp at that point in time. Why would none contain Mexican oregano. And no it isn’t a cost thing. Surely Bill S knew about Mexican oregano. And he could have listed it as oregano so don’t give me the law suit BS.
Because wait for it… wasn’t in the OR

Bill S was No idiot
If he was limited to 5 items and Mexican Oregano / Sage were similar in nature of Listed as the Same item which they classifies them the same in Print on Tins
WHY would Bill S use BOTH the Mexican Oregano and Sage ? All He would have had to do is use the ONE that was the BEST or BEST fit and he chose the SAGE. Which could have been Mexican Oregano and He could have listed it as SAGE and it was Legal to Do under the Law and Fit into any potential agreement he had.
Just because he label it as Sage it could have Been Mexican Oregano and either Name were FDA Safe and either could have been listed

At least we know that MK's 99-X lists Sage with top billing. Whether or not that Sage is what North Americans typically envision as ordinary Sage, or if it is Mexican Oregano/Sage (Lippia graveolens, or other) needs to be determined. We also know that at one time Allspice was given top billing, and that Coriander is up there as well. How do you give Sage top billing, and Allspice top billing? Their weights must be the same whereby to do so. And if 99-X truly has only 5 ingredients beyond Salt, MSG, Black Pepper, and White Pepper, then 99-X might look like this:
200. grams Pastry Flour 24.0 grams Flour Salt ------------------------ 2.50 grams MSG 2.50 grams Black Pepper (Medium Coarse) 2.50 grams White Pepper 2.00 grams Flour Salt 0.667 grams Mexican Sage/Oregano (Lippia graveolens) (1) 0.667 grams Coriander (2) 0.667 grams Allspice (3) 0.667 grams Ginger (4) 0.333 grams Cayenne Pepper (5)
Sum = 12.5 grams below the dashed line

The above at full scale:
25 Lbs. Pastry Flour 3 Lbs. Flour Salt ------------------------ 5 Ounces MSG 5 Ounces Black Pepper (Medium Coarse) 5 Ounces White Pepper 4.00 Ounces Flour Salt 1-1/3 Ounces Mexican Sage/Oregano (Lippia graveolens) (1) 1-1/3 Ounces Coriander (2) 1-1/3 Ounces Allspice (3) 1-1/3 Ounces Ginger (4) 2/3 Ounces Cayenne Pepper (5)
Sum = 25 Ounces below the dashed line

Or, since we don't actually know, it might be conventional Sage and not Mexican Sage.

I almost always present an alternative:
99-X Clone Proposal II
25 Lbs. Pastry Flour 3 Lbs. Flour Salt ------------------------ 5 Ounces MSG 5 Ounces Black Pepper (Medium Coarse) 5 Ounces White Pepper 5 Ounces Flour Salt 1 Ounces Mexican Sage/Oregano (Lippia graveolens) (1) 1 Ounces Coriander (2) 1 Ounces Allspice (3) 1 Ounces Ginger (4) 1 Ounces Dried Red Chili Pepper Flakes (5)
Sum = 25 Ounces below the dashed line
