A note of caution for the above recipe: All item #1-5 H&S are most likely fully maxed out as seen, and it may prove to be the case that some level of backing down may prove beneficial for some if not all of them. Note carefully that this recipe is scaled to only 100 grams of cake flour.
Edit: That said, developing the note may require the zing provided by the maxed out spices...

Once again I bring forth the notion that CHS likely had 11 (or more) "go-to" H&S, but may never have used all 11 simultaneously.

And I must toss out that 1 gram of Allspice is likely to be the flavor/aroma/oils equivalent of 'something close' to the following:
0.40 grams Nutmeg 0.25 grams Cinnamon 0.20 grams Clove 0.15 grams Mace --------------------------- Sum = 1 gram
Replacing 1 gram of Allspice with the above increases the ingredient list by 3.

But the "unexplored" potential exists that these individual components "may" actually taste better when summed at the correct ratio than for using Allspice alone.

Note that when I mention 'Mexican Oregano' I'm referring specifically to 'Lippia Graveolens'. I've discovered that several Mexican herbs actually go by the name 'Mexican Oregano' (and/or 'Mexican Sage').

My new perspective guess on a reduced ingredient set deep fried chicken (after eating some exceptionally great tasting KFC OR):
200 grams Cake Flour (apply butter flavored Canola Oil spray after cooking) 24 grams Flour Salt 15 grams MSG 0.45 grams I+G 7 to 9 grams of chicken fat and yeast extract containing Chicken Soup Base with no MSG/I+G (depending upon Salt percentage) 4 grams Black Pepper 2 grams White Pepper 1.5 to 2 grams Coriander Seed 0.7 to 1 gram Ginger 0.3 to 0.4 gram of Anise Seed 0.15 to 0.20 grams of Clove 0.10 to 0.20 grams of Mace

To get a bit of Herb into the mix while retaining 5 ingredients beyond B&W Pepper, one might try Caraway Seed instead of Coriander Seed:
200 grams Cake Flour (apply butter flavored Canola Oil spray after cooking) 24 grams Flour Salt 15 grams MSG 0.45 grams I+G 7 to 9 grams of chicken fat and yeast extract containing Chicken Soup Base with no MSG/I+G (depending upon Salt percentage) 4 grams Black Pepper 2 grams White Pepper 1.5 to 2 grams Caraway Seed 0.7 to 1 gram Ginger 0.25 to 0.5 grams of Summer Savory 0.15 to 0.20 grams of Clove 0.10 to 0.20 grams of Mace

I'm presently thinking that this might be a "reduced to 5 ingredients beyond B&W Pepper" Southern Fried Chicken breading worthy of an attempt:
200. grams Cake Flour 24.0 grams Salt 13.3 grams MSG 0.40 grams I+G 2.75 grams White Pepper 2.75 grams Black Pepper (Half Fine, Half Coarse) 7.00 grams Generic Chicken Soup Base (No MSG or I+G) [1] 2.50 grams Celery Seed [2] 0.30 grams Nutmeg [3] 0.20 grams Clove [4] 0.10 grams Mace [5]

The restricted to 5 items beyond B&W Pepper version of my successful recipe #17. The hope here is that at 1 gram, Allspice will adequately provide for both the Eugenol (Clove) and the Mace levels found within the actual Recipe #17. That plus also adequately cover for the Nutmeg and Cinnamon. No guarantees as to Allspice accomplishing all of this. But I can't conceive of a 5 ingredient recipe that might come closer overall.

OK, after a quick bit of additional thought on this matter, there may be an alternative that allows for the critical Mace component to be retained, and also for the licorice to shine through, and lastly for the Clove, Nutmeg, and Cinnamon to also come through, though this version is even more highly speculative and less (than zero) guaranteed than for the above (previous) 5 ingredient version.
Edit: A word of caution: Star-Anise is very potent stuff. And 0.175 grams for it is my best initial guess. A little goes a long way...
