To my tastebuds the herb Savory brings connotations of anything but being savory. The taste was honestly awful. Perhaps this was directly due to my expectation that an herb named Savory must in fact be savory. I thought the same way until i tried winter savory, which to me, does actually smell savory and very unique compared to the summer savory i tried. I am going to continue using the winter savory from now on, it is definitely something i could see the Colonel using.

I know this is a contentious one. Don’t want to start a fight again. But just to recap: - according to one of CHS’s closest employees, CHS knew and used Savory from his childhood on
- "revealed“ by CHS in a TV commercial
- disclosed by Glen (from a KFC business partner)
- was on every shelf in the 1930s in the form of Poultry Seasoning
- available in the 1930s
Savory is rather hard to find in the US nowadays? Well, spice and herb preferences obviously change. Mediterranean Oregano almost completely replaced Mexican Oregano. Coriander seeds became much more popular. And who is using spices like Caraway or Dill Seed these days? We cannot on the one hand say that CHS was a master of spiceology, and assume he was ignorant of Savory on the other.

At this point I would say I'm 90% in on savory as an ingredient. It may have entered the recipe as part of poultry seasoning, but I feel strongly about it.

I found this marketing booklet from 1925 called Spices and Their Uses: Helpful Suggestions for Better Cooking Flavors. It gives a very brief overview of the 'most popular' spices at the time. 19 spices and herbs are being presented, plus 3 'flavoring salts'. There are four herbs in total. Now guess which herbs this company would classify as the most popular? Yes: Marjoram Sage Savory ThymeSavory is not merely a 'Canadian' item as some have argued before. It was right there. It might not be as popular in the US now, but it definitely was a very common ingredient. Source: repository.duke.edu/dc/eaa/CK0046

This is why, with all of the information that has been sought, and gathered, I have tried to find out if CHS gardened. Most everything I've tried through the years was grown in my back yard. The only difficult one to grow, in my area, which is similar to the climate of Kentucky, was savory. It is a small plant, and removing the flowering tops to enhance flavor, is difficult. It simply is a low producer. CHS's shoe size and favorite ice cream are easily discovered, but not his gardening history.
