Hi,
If you try frying a piece of dough, with only a pinch of ground Thyme mixed with it, and another one with only a pinch of ground Savory, you will notice that Savory is the clear winner here, it's flavour is clear and pure.
If I had to add a licorice flavour to the recipe, I will go with Tarragon, it doesn't strike the recipe the way Anise does, and keep the haromny of the overall flavour profile, I tried Basil, but it took the result away from the note I was looking for.

I know I didn't last time I had some. And I just don't remember it from the 70's either. Eugenol, garlic and a sweetness I found last time in under cooked breading. I'd just like some confirmation they tasted it.

Hi Silver,
As I tried both of those herbs in different ways and recipe, I would not add Thyme to Savory, then I will ruin the Savory and turn it to Thyme.
Freshly ground Savory is my favourite.
My two cents.

Good question. Personally I don"t remember tasting a clear licorice flavour that makes me keen it must be in there. Nowadays I don't add licorice spices to my recipe, I think it gets more complex, and doesn't shout ORIGINAL to me.

Hi Silver,
A recipe that I feel tastes like or close to the original I still don't have
Two major problems here,
First the odor of the Original recipe is unique, the other day I entered a room and immediatley I caught it dancing all over the place, I looked around to see one of the workers has brought a bag of KFC, he didn't even start to open and eat it, it was throrough and very strong.
This odor, no matter what I add, is not there in my recipes, not even a hint of it, sorry.
The second problem is the Pepper, when I have KFC, even today, the clear and pure pepper flavour is very strong, and I was not able to mimick this, adding more pepper didn't work, it ruined other herbs and spices.

Deep Taste, are you still of the opinion that Tarragon can be used beneficially in place of Marjoram/Oregano?

Deep Taste , are you still of the opinion that Tarragon can be used beneficially in place of Marjoram/Oregano? I don't remember saying that, I dropped Marjoram from my attempts long time ago, Tarragon could only replce Fennel in my opinion. Oregano is my personal favourite herbs, I used it closed eyes, that doesnt mean it belongs to the original recipe though. I had many tasty tecipes combining Tarragon and Oregano. Deep Taste

Working with the assumption there is only 3 herb slots available in the recipe. I favour the combination of sage and savory. It just has a great smell when mixed. Leaving 1 slot for another complementary herb. Unless you consider there to be blends within the recipe
