While doing a search I hit upon this amazing tidbit:
Perhaps this particular form of Mexican Oregano will functionally do away with a need for a licorice delivering ingredient, in addition to doing away with a need for a citrus delivering ingredient.

Seems like the substitute would be closer to marjoram than sage?

One of the reasons that I favor Mexican oregano, besides the use in Mexican dishes, is that it has become difficult to find, along with white peppercorns and Aromat (expensive). KFC has long tentacles and I don't believe in coincidences. The pandemic was a blessing for many enterprises, in more ways than people might think. Can't find ingredients? Blame the pandemic. Works for KFC. Plant a few spies and lead people away from "material" ingredients. Works for KFC.

There's only one way to discover the benefits and detriments as to the flavor and aroma characteristics of Mexican Oregano (aka, Mexican Sage, Lippia graveolens), and that's to add a lot of it to a recipe that has no other Herbs. Does it really sit in as a viable substitute for the likes of Anise, Citrus, Thyme, Savory, Sage, Marjoram, and Oregano?

It's in my chili seasoning, and my chili seasoning has the note.

I checked and tasted my Mexican oregano again, yeah this stuff is definitely in the recipe if Sanders really wanted to have the best fried chicken. Tastes very much like regular oregano but with a definite lemony taste. Even has some notes of tobacco.

The Mexican Oregano / Sage
Blends Great with Pepper and can add the higher kick note to the Pepper or a heavier Back end flavor, with Pepper.

If it was Lippia graveolens instead of Sage originally, Allspice merely a shortage replacement and Coriander Seed a later addition, you are ultimately saying that the very top ingredients CHS chose to be used in 99X were never part of the OR. Very interesting stance.
I wonder why it takes us years to even come close to the note of the OR, when apparently every single item of the original formula could be comfortably swapped.

I'm NOT saying it was Only Mexican Oregano It could have been Both Originally. Mexican Oregano and Sage.
as for the Original items it was Flour, Salt, Pepper.
everything after that is Locked in a High security Vault with Only 2 K.F.C. executive's who don't fly on the same plane, or use the same Bathroom.
I K.F.C. original recipe was stored in Joe Biden Garage next to the Corvette and the F.B.I. will never disclose the items NOW.

Suddenly things seem to be backing away from a definitive knowledge of the recipe, and settling back in at the previous "it could be" level.
