I made an interesting discovery the other day. Todd Wilbur once disclosed tomato powder/bouillon as THE secret ingredient on his website. It very soon disappeared and was never mentioned in the TV show either. Luckily though, the entry text still appears on google search (see below). Why would an ingredient you consider utterly important for the recipe just disappear like that? Then we have the Gloria Pitzer story... Hmm deepfriednew101 , you once said tomato was a key ingredient, if I remember correctly. I have no idea where to start quantity wise.

I wonder if its more that you can get certain ingredients this way more easier than single items? I can't remember, but if Gloria's recipe didn't have MSG. Then perhaps this is how the essence of MSG entered her recipe.

Just mentioning this, but decades ago my wife and I made Gloria Pitzer's recipe, and the resulting chicken was awful. We never attempted cloning KFC again until the Ledington recipe appeared in 2016. And this turned us off until at least 2020. The desire to try the GP copycat recipe was the specific reason why we purchased our Dazey Deep Fryer, which finally gave up the ghost roughly about a year ago.

The Original Gloria P Mix had a Basic flavor BUT was NOT a great comparison as she LEFTOUT the White Pepper. If you make her Original Mix and add White Pepper you will have a Very close Copycat KFC.
The Soup mix Lipton's tomato or Knorr had a Heavy MSG amount in either package.
she did say if you can't find Tomato use a Cream Soup powder mix and Add Paprika
She also mentioned the Rose Color Chicken that was more the Original KFC Chicken Color NOT Golden Brown

Listen to the Radio interviews of Gloria P where she had CHS calling in. She had 3 or 4 times CHS phoned Her.
CHS Called in Multiple times to her show. UNTIL KFC forced CHS to stop calling the Show and speaking on the Air with Gloria P.

I saw a video once of a person using tomato powder in a breading recipe. They claimed tomato powder as being strong and that little should be used. I have only had tomato flakes as part of a mixture of vegetable flakes. But not pure tomato powder. Any truth to the above?

YES Tomato Powder Pure can be over powering.
BUT tomato soup Powder mix which contains I&G and MSG plus other items is less powerful then Pure Tomato powder.
if you ever made Gloria P recipe it is NOT over powered by the Tomato powdered Lipton soup mix.
She Does say it GIVE the Chicken a More Rose color and you could use White Cream Soup. Knorr Brand

It seems that powdered milk should be a major component of a powdered tomato soup mix.
