Remember the story of Gloria Pitzer and her talk with the colonel on some radio show in the mid to late 70's? He supposedly told her that she can find a "package of food" that might have 11 ingredients that would do all of the work for her. The rest of the story is that she immediately went out and grabbed a package of good seasons italian dressing mix. Later she added some tomato soup mix.. Both of those are wrong. Now I don't think that the colonel was giving any hints to his own secret recipe but I do believe the product he was hinting towards was Shake 'n Bake. It LITERALLY does all of the work for you. It came out in 1965 and it was certainly on grocery shelves in the seventies and even now. Only thing is that the label that once listed herbs & spices in detail was changed sometime during the 70's prior to that radio show discussion between Gloria and CS. Otherwise, I think she would've grabbed the Shake 'n Bake. Maybe the ingredients were so close to CS's recipe that it was pulled from the box.
Below is a vintage photo and I think this is a box from 1976 if I remember the posting title. It is a very low res photo but it is still readable.
The ingredient listing is as follows:
Wheat Flour, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean, Cottonseed and Palm Oils, Salt, Malted Barley,
Sugar, Spices (Mustard Flour, Celery Seed, Chili Pepper, Black Pepper, Thyme, Basil, Red Pepper, Cloves,
Oregano, Rosemary), Paprika, yeast, Cornstarch, Garlic Powder, Monosodium Glutamate ( Flavor Enhancer),
Natural Hickory Smoke Flavor, Artificial Color, Onion Powder
So, here we have a list of 10 herbs and spices in parenthesis. Missing one to make it a full 11. Garlic and Onion powder is not considered and herb or spice because back then they considered them vegetable powders or natural flavor elements. Makes sense I guess. The only thing I see missing would be Ginger.
A couple things to note: Where and how did they come up with this blend? Funny it came out the year after CS sold his business. The other thing is for the mustard and celery deniers. Here it is plain as day on a store bought package. Maybe not anymore, but it was at one time. Whats also funny is that guy from Top-Secret recipes did a clone for Shake 'n Bake and he doesn't even use half of the herbs & spices listed on this original box. Some research, huh?
Thoughts?
