Over the last few weeks I have been leaning more towards the recipe being B&W Pepper plus 9 ingredients. I have myself and I seen others count B&W Pepper as 1 ingredient. I'm starting to think more that isn't the case You could be correct in this. That approach seemingly makes the use of Star-Anise more favorable, since it brings 4 (and possibly 5) flavors along with it. 1) Licorice 2) Clove 3) Cinnamon 4) Nutmeg 5) Sweetness I'm not sure that any other single spice delivers up such a diverse range of significant flavors. For example, Anise Seed (Aniseed) only delivers item #1, and perhaps a hint of #5. But Star-Anise rapidly approaches the tolerance level for licorice as its addition weight is increased, so it's use in delivering upon the other flavors in what may be considered adequate amounts is highly delimited.

It’s listed on some of the seasoning bags. It could well mean that it was added sometime later and is not thought to be part of the 11. Or it is and had to be labelled outside of the general Herbs and Spices labelling. For me if Garlic is in, then oregano/marjoram or thyme or savory is out

Allspice and Star-Anise may work beneficially together at some level. I don't believe it has to be one or the other. Replacing Oregano/Marjoram with Garlic is an option. And it might go well with the Sage being of the Mexican Sage/Oregano variety. I speculated at one juncture that Grace's Sage might be of this type.
Note: 'Mexican Sage' and 'Mexican Oregano' are merely synonyms for the exact same spice.

My cooked recipe #12 had all of these:
Clove Allspice Star-Anise
It was too much. I think that for Allspice and Star-Anise to play well together the Clove might have to say bye-bye.
It may be a "pick any two" situation between these three.

deepfriednew101 has mentioned more than once that if you are using Sage you don't need to add Marjoram/Mediterranean Oregano. And in some of his posts addressing this he has also mentioned Mexican Sage. We need clarification from him as to which Sage allows for jettisoning Marjoram/Mediterranean Oregano.

I agree that the combination of Allspice and Star-Anise needs to be explored, while leaving Clove out of the picture.

I have never been a proponent for Star Anise being in the OR. So I won't claim I have been. I'm also not a fan of the Vials being "real" however I did toss out the idea of Vial J being Star-Anise based on some web pictures of it ground. Which if it was the case and the vials are real. It removes any form of red pepper.
