Basil was the last ingredient that I had/have on a list of possibles. It fits some of the blocks but I read it doesn't do well at high heat? But I have never gotten it completely off my mind.

flg , I've seen (and noted) your mention of that before. The high heat degradation part concerns me. But the oils of concern (if molecularly the same across the various of herbs & spices) should all have the same vapor pressures and thus flash off similarly with temperature regardless of the source herb/spice.

I'm thinking that in the mid 1930's to mid 1950's it was more likely that Basil was on the average homes H&S shelf than was Allspice or Star-Anise. I could be wrong in this thinking.

if was in some regions a home grown item like Onions garlic, Green Onions, Basil and many other herbs were grown to use in more summer and garden grow.
Basil was used lots in the Butcher and sausage making
