We use a Microplane Grater, or zest grater ETC ETC.
use it for Garlic, Onions, Celery, Nutmeg,, Citrus
Its a Kitchen Tool that's far the best for Fresh Flavor.
We Grate Tons of fresh items into Flour and then Sift the Flour. There is NO better Flavor. The items which have moisture get absorbed into the flour and silting it breaks down any lumps. If there are any lumps or larger pieces we just throw all the into the small blender and blend it down then re sift it, or throw the larger particles into the Gravy, cook it down and strain the gravy for real creamy smooth gravy.
KEY Point is you cannot get the same flavor from powdered spices compared to fresh Grated item's. The way it was done in the 1920's and 1930's
