these are spice weights from 1939 Oz to Grams
Spice Weight Tin 1939
1 1/2 Oz = 42.52 Gram
1 1/4 Oz = 35.44
1 ½ OZ = 42.53 Gram Celery Seed Whole
1 1/4 Oz = 31.89 Gram Clove Ground
1 1/4 Oz = 35.44 Gram All Spice
1 1/4 Oz = 35.44 Gram Red Pepper (Cayenne)
1 1/4 Oz = 49.60 Gram Curry powder
1 1/2 Oz = 38.98 Gram Nutmeg
1 1/2 Oz = 42.53 Gram Turmeric
1 1/2 Oz = 42.52 Grams All Spice Sauer’s
1.5 Oz = 42 Grams Cream Tarter
2Oz = 56.70 Gram Pepper White
2 Oz = 56.7 Gram All Spice
4 Oz = 113.4 Gram Salt Petre
4 Oz = 113 Gram Mustard Dry Double Superfine
4 Oz = 133.4 Gram Cinnamon
6 Oz – 170 Grams Cinnamon Pure Ground Watkins
6Lbs = 2721 Grams Black pepper
1 Oz = 28.36 Grams Nutmeg Bee Brand
1 Oz = 28.53 Grams Cinnamon Stick Batavia
.75OZ = 17 Grams Rosemary Leaves
48 Oz 3Lbs 1.36kg Salt
10 Oz = 1LB Morton Salt
so if 4oz of spice were used in many recipes the whole Tin or 2 Tins were used ?
just my observation I go by the weights on the Tins in 1939 NOT weights and guesses NOW today
I never see 1 OZ and 1 Gram the same home use weight ? ? ?

This shows that in 1939 some of the spice companies clearly had no clue that 1 weight ounce always translates to 28.35 grams. Sad!!!

it brings into question for me what amount to you reference 26 Oz or the Grams weights
if we reference back to a OLD recipe the amount are not as precise as the Day today they had over/under scales in 1939 and balance beam scales that are NOT digital Gram scales to .003 precise ?
We also measured in 2 handfuls and made the best dang chicken I had ever made ?
Cooking is NOT all about exact to the .003 Gram. its about mixing the right blend even when your short on a item or have a different Brand that is NOT the same as the last
The Old generation Knew how to cook from touch feel and smell and made the best meals ever.
