Both the Cumin and Coriander have very similar points.
I think the Cumin has more taste for the spice. In review from CHS recipes that he has released and others which have been accumulated he used Cumin NOT Coriander and back in the 1935's Coriander was Not as common of a spice. It was available BUT you will find much more Cumin was available at that time and Cumin was used in many Chili spices, and seasonings.
Cumin, Celery Seed, Cayenne were a often blend to make a chili spice.
BOTH work fine in looking back what Marion Kay did was use Coriander in there mix instead of Cumin in the Original 99x after the lawsuit case forced a change.
i guess its only a suggestion from personnel observation Please check and see what you find with the 1935-1940 spices available more cumin or coriander?
I look forward to other input and valued recourse you find
remember the words Bill S Marion Kay said he went back to what would have been the Spice most likely CHS used in 1939? NOT what the NEW AGE KFC were using when he looked at there spices ?

Cumin is one of the ingredients that is listed in CHS BBQ spice recipe so you're definitely right. I guess KFC later changed it to coriander

I agree Cumin was used in the CHS BBQ Sauce and other recipes.
The Cumin from my reviews of extensive recipes from the 1930's showed Cumin. BUT where I really noticed it is when I'm buying antique spice tins. There are multiple companies who had cumin and I can find many antique CUMIN TINS. The coriander tins are all from the later 1940's Time period which are easy to tell from the Logo designs and color of many tins.
Coriander was available in the later 1930's BUT it was usually in a spice blend and some butchers used it BUT NOT A COMMON item ?
If anyone can show me proof there was easy LOTS of Coriander in the 1930'S please show me ?
I enjoy continual never ending learning and understanding of that time period.
When I review Marion Kay and its 99x it labeling on the 99x seem to be from the 1980's labels. where Coriander was listed.
There was a Difference in the 1970's Chicken Seasoning they made and the 99X from the 1980's
The name that it was packaged under was also NOT always 99X that was Originally sent to the KFC stores. The 99x was coined later.
If you also review the background of 99x Bill S also added 1 more item
