If you chose onion you do not have an understanding of cookery.
If were forced to only use either garlic or onion, garlic is what you'd choose. Why? because garlic is a more all-in one spice and offers more flavours than onion can give.

Onion Has its place in many dishes where Garlic Does NOT belong
ONION RINGS do not use Garlic ?

DeepFried101, I think you have a Novel idea! FRIED Garlic Rings! Or seriously-just crispy battered coated clove. I know some individuals who are just crazy about garlic.

Hard to keep the Breading stuck to the Garlic
You have to Place it in Flour first then dip in Egg warsh and then seasoned flour for best result or cut small slit's into the Garlic

Elephant garlic could be sliced providing a scaffolding for the breading. You could try shaking the common garlic cloves in a closed plastic container to rough up the surface. Add corneal to the batter.
Cheese stuffed deep fried elephant garlic? Garlic heaven!
