All I will add here is that when I did a split batch with one half containing Star Anise, and the other half not containing it, my Wife preferred the "more balanced and rounded" half that contained it.

I will say I can never remember any licorice taste to KFC. Ever.
If it's there it's low and not star anise. tarragon? maybe. i haven't given it the time.

At a level of around 0.17 to 0.20 grams of Star Anise in 200 grams of flour (plus H&S) I can detect the licorice but my Wife can't detect it.
At a level of 0.50 grams of Anise Seed (Aniseed) in 200 grams of flour (plus H&S) neither my Wife or I can detect any Licorice. But it 'may' still be working in the background to modify (or round/balance out) the flavors of the other H&S. Wih the operative word here being "may".
I'm hoping that reducing Star Anise to 0.125 grams brings the Licorice below my detection threshold. If this works it will indicate that Star Anise has on the order of 4 times (or more) Licorice (Anethole oil) than does Anise Seed, gram for gram.

Star-Anise also delivers a pronounced sweetness and a background with what is often referred to as a sort of quasi or faux Cinnamon_likeness that (for both of these) Anise Seed does not at all deliver. Anise Seed is more of a one trick Pony, whereas Star Anise is complex as to it's flavors.
Edit: It may be that along with Anise Seed some Dextrose and a 'pinch' of Cinnamon are required, whereas with Star Anise neither of these extras are required.
Edit #2: Why does the earliest Kentucky Fried Chicken seasoned flour bag photo we possess state Dextrose as an ingredient, whereas later bags do not? Hmmm? (might there be a subtle wink/wink, hint/hint here)
Edit #3: Why did more of the Esquire 'experts' detect Cinnamon than for any other ingredient (this side of Pepper) which they held in common? Were they smelling Cinnamon, or faux Cinnamon?

I'm attempting to be systematic as well as to apply logic and reasoning here...

As far as the dextrose on the bags. I wondered if that was included when eggs were being used. Once it was powdered milk and powdered egg. There was some sweetness in that?

Caraway Seed at Low levels has a Anise and Citrus flavor Although some say they don't care for the Taste. To my knowledge Caraway Seed Oil does not contain any chemical compounds related to a Licorice flavor.
A guy on the 'other forum' insists that if you want to clone 'Shake-N-Bake' chicken you must use Caraway Seeds, but if you want to clone KFC OR you must stay away from Caraway. This guy's comments have kept me from trying Caraway Seeds.
Other comments are often along the lines that if you are going to add Caraway, you must add it very sparingly, and certainly at half or less what you might enjoy for Coriander Seed.

Are you willing to state openly that Caraway Seed is one of the original 11?

I will say The same thing that I have said and Shocked everyone for decade.
I have for a Long time stated this comment about Coriander (it was one of the Hard items to find in 1930's)
It was a Large spice that was being used after 1960's and became a large seller and Bill S started selling it at Marion Kay.
Bill S Marion Kay Has said that the Original Chicken Seasoning Marion Kay made he used 11 Herbs and Spices and added 1 more item to it
There is speculation that the additional item was Coriander BUT other argue it was M.S.G.
In 1930's it was easier for ME to Locate M.S.G. then locating Coriander Tin's for collection and still is Harder to find for sale in 2023 antique Coriander Tins
Currently I'm NOT prepared to Openly discuss some items and Verification of some items in relationship to the Original C.H.S. recipe,
I will reference OLD Posting I have made which may Help in some information for Herbs
View the New Zealand Video where the 2 Men visit K.F.C. multiple times and Reference What item are in the NEW AGE K.F.C. seasoning keeping in mind that the Video is in relationship to NEW AGE K.F.C.
