I’ve been reading about Tonka beans. Banned in foods in the US since 1950s but were common in vanilla extracts, desserts and medicines prior. Also used in flavoring tobacco and perfumes. Still widely used in Europe and other parts of the world. Used like nutmeg and apparently toxic dose is a similar amount to nutmeg. Anyone have any experience using this spice?

I had a quart of "vanilla" my in-laws brought back from Mexico in the 1980s, which was made from Tonka beans. To me, it smelled and tasted like kerosene. It's still out in the garage somewhere. The news was that it was poison.

google said it has “almonds, cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, and woodruff” aroma and taste to it. KFC exudes those scent in a very seductive way. it’s like perfume.
i will give it a try. it’s sad US citizens can’t acquire it because it was banned since 1954?! which means it was available to the Colonel in 1940s.
this could be the source of that “sweet vanilla-almond smell” coupled with a woody spice.
Also, I changed my mind about bay leaf. Having seen Mccormick selling ground versions of it. I’ll give it a shot. KFC still have that unusual piney peppery taste

I'll try to find that old bottle of vanilla, which will take an act of God.

I like the sounds of the flavour profile. However, it is incredibly expensive. It costs $20 for 10 gram from my supplier i use.

The FDA banned the sale and use of Tonka Beans in the USA in 1954. Who seriously thinks they are in KFC?

I Do Not want to say much about the posting above with the Exception of this
IF a Item has been Banned which Tonka Beans were and possibly still might be. It would Be like any Banned item.
Do You are anyone Really Think that a MAJOR Billion Dollar Company would take on the Risk Factor of adding a Item which is Banned into there Foods ?
K.F.C. and other take enough heat for adding MSG. and it cost them millions of Dollars.
ADDING A BAN Item would be Not allowed and the People who Authorized the use of Ban substance could face Criminal Charges or the Corporation Serious Fines Plus Civil Litigation out the A**
Makes NO sense arguing about Ban substance or implying a person is a narcissistic When the logic He made makes Risk management sense ?
