Remember many of the People who work at KFC just push the Start button and DO NOT give a Flying Pluck a chicken about what's on the Labels or what's Listed as Item's There are some KFC Owners, Managers and Employee's who Take Note's and Read Label's and or Photo some items

its when Calvin King and Others
speak about what's ON THE GRILLE CHICKEN Original SEASONED chicken that is NOT Deep Fried becomes open discussion as to the
Original Seasoned or 11 Herbs and Spices.
Calvin King has taken Notes on items inside KFC and Lists from the Grille Chicken, Seasoned Battered Fries, Chicken Wraps, which contained the Original Recipe chicken as Parts of the Item.
It correlates to what other countries have printed as OR spices and used Items in other countries

I just tasted some Sweet Basil, and it tastes great. I did not however detect any anise/licorice flavor in it. Should I have?

it depends on where the Basil was Grown ?
in many of the Basil Jar Spices it also depends on the region and type of Plant.
When it comes down to the Flavor profile there are times you need to create what's required. The 2021 and Times have changed over decade.
There have been some people say that one could never create the Original KFC.
That's NOT true and one ONLY needs to stay focused with words Bill S from Marion Kay said: What would have been the Most likely and The Best items to create what CHS did in the Time period CHS made the Original KFC 11 Herbs and Spices.
CHS has openly stated He started tinkering with the chicken years after he opened the Servistation and that would have make the Tinkering of chicken after 1932 until 1939 when KFC and CHS said the Original 11 Herbs and Spices were developed.
Sweet Basil was a common item in that time period, use the Best you can find or Fresh. Fresh will be the Best you can find NOW or mix some Fresh and Powdered to make powdered better ?

I have been paused on this for awhile trying to figure out for myself where to go next on the recipe. There has been a ton of discussion lately of what is in the OR and if you tallied it all up I think we hit around 20 ingredients. A ridiculously long list of things. Spurred on by my cooking a Kitchen Sink version that accounted for 16 of those items. I started thinking more about the likely hood of something being there.
First off I believe of the 20 some items brought up as part of the OR. Most likely nearly all have been in at one point. But at some point the recipe was decided upon and although it changed throughout the years, to today's mostly some kind of extract, synthetic, lab based formula. (think the KFC fire log). There was a point in time it was mostly Herbs and Spices and early on in those days items may have been substituted do to cost, supply or they caused trouble for the franchise's etc.
So I believe when someone comes forward to say this ingredient is in the OR. We need to ask at what point in time. 1939, 1955, 1970,80 etc. Because this makes a huge difference in determining the likely hood of it. Again substitutions probably happened for various reasons. So the info they are presenting may be correct, but for only a certain period of time. Or perhaps region, country etc.
So here is where I am at ingredient list wise:
Items we know are in the OR:
MSG Salt Black Pepper White Pepper Dehydrated Garlic
Items used in the process of making the OR:
Powdered Egg Whites Citric Acid Baker's Yeast Flour
Items I think have been in OR the longest:
Allspice Coriander Ginger Sage Sweet Pepper/cayenne Thyme Marjoram Clove Savory Anise (Star or seed) Nutmeg
To me that's the list. And it's obvious it can't be all of those. They are the likely fore runners to me. And some of those have been analyzed in KFC and in 99-x so some results can be determined as to the likely minimum levels of a few of them.
Items I think where in at one point. And this is NOT an exhaustive list, they have merit. But where replaced or removed along the way. Most likely early on:
Oregano Onion Mace Cardamom Paprika (Heavier amount) Basil
I'm sitting on 1 of 2 versions of my cook this up coming week. I think you can tell from this what may be in and what won't be.

Guess what we had for dinner today?
Real KFC Original Recipe Chicken (without any of my homemade deep fried chicken to compete against it). The only twist is that this time it came from a different KFC than it did for the head to head my family had a couple weeks ago with my cooked recipe #7 (which is merely cooked recipe #4 plus added Tarragon)
Assessment:
1) Way less salty than the KFC from the head to head competition. 2) Noticeably less Herb & Spicy also. 3) Way more MSG. The long term lingering aftertaste of the heavy load of MSG reminded me EXACTLY of the lingering taste I experienced early today when I ate some MSG straight-up. There is absolutely zero chance in my opinion of this being at the level of 3 to 3.5 grams in 200 grams. This chicken seems as if it HAD to be well above the level of 15 grams in 200 as for my recipes. 4) We noticed the exact same lifeless/dead (sort of stale) tasting meat as for the other KFC location.
On a scale of our cooked Recipe #7 at a 10, my wife and I settled upon giving this KFC_OR a 6. Simply put, it was awful, and tasted like chemicals and MSG.

No way you can't get something that tastes better than the modern greasy tasteless mess today with just MSG, SALT, Pepper and Garlic. I only tasted the other ingredients in a spot of under cooked greyish breading one day
