Jollibee Chickenjoy 100% assuredly uses Fennel or Anise Seeds, as it's primary seasoning ingredient is '5-Spice Powder'. Is she allergic to Jollibee Chickenjoy, or to anything containing 5-Spice Powder? I've never heard of Jollibee (we are in massachusetts). At this point if it is listed as an ingredient she doesn't try it. Steve

Your allergic family member better never eat a Pizza. I'm eating a 'Connie's' frozen organic Pizza as I'm typing this, and to my taste buds it is rife with Anethole. We always check ingredients, I don't recall seeing on a pizza but we make our own most of the time anyhow. Fortunately it's not a super common ingredient in our area. Steve

Anise is not used in pizza, or pizza sauce, and fennel and anise are not exactly the same, chemically.

Anise is not used in pizza, or pizza sauce, and fennel and anise are not exactly the same, chemically. I beg to differ. The active molecular ingredient in both is Anethole. Anise Seed is more of a one trick pony, with Anethole being about all it delivers, but Fennel delivers plenty of Anethole along with a few other flavorant molecules.
That plus a simple search of "Anise Seed Pizza Sauce" yields hundreds of hits, proving that it is rather popular in Pizza Sauce.

Both Fennel and Anise are from the Apiaceae plant family, as are a number of ingredients which we add to our Chicken coatings. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ApiaceaeThat said, I'm not a researcher in allergens, and it is entirely possible that one may be allergic to certain of this plant family without being allergic to others among this plant family. Some others in this same plant family include caraway, carrot, celery, chervil, coriander, cumin, dill, lovage, cow parsley, parsley, and parsnip.

Fennel, Foeniculum vulgare, and anise, Pimpinella anisum, are plants which have been used as estrogenic agents for millennia. Specifically, they have been reputed to increase milk secretion, promote menstruation, facilitate birth, alleviate the symptoms of the male climacteric, and increase libido. In the 1930s, some interest was shown in these plants in the development of synthetic estrogens. The main constituent of the essential oils of fennel and anise, anethole, has been considered to be the active estrogenic agent. However, further research suggests that the actual pharmacologically active agents are polymers of anethole, such as dianethole and photoanethole.
And now the can of worms is open, with no need to do so. I will not be employing a chemist to show that an allergy to one does not necessitate an allergy to the other.
